Ingredients

Check off items as you gather them
  • 1 cup sabudana (tapioca pearls)
  • 2 medium potatoes, boiled and mashed
  • 1/2 cup roasted peanuts, coarsely crushed
  • 2 green chilies, finely chopped (adjust to taste)
  • 1 inch ginger, grated
  • 1/4 cup fresh coriander leaves, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon cumin powder
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • Salt to taste
  • Oil for deep frying

Method / Preparation

Follow step-by-step instructions
  1. Rinse the sabudana thoroughly and soak them in 1.5 cups of water for 4-5 hours or overnight until they are soft and plump. Drain any excess water completely.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the soaked sabudana, mashed potatoes, crushed roasted peanuts, chopped green chilies, grated ginger, chopped coriander leaves, cumin powder, lemon juice, and salt.
  3. Mix all the ingredients well with your hands until everything is thoroughly combined and forms a firm dough-like consistency. Make sure there are no lumps.
  4. Divide the mixture into small, equal portions and roll them into desired pop or bite-sized shapes. You can make them round or cylindrical.
  5. Heat oil in a deep pan or kadai over medium heat. To check if the oil is hot enough, drop a tiny piece of the mixture; it should sizzle and rise to the surface.
  6. Carefully slide the sabudana pops into the hot oil, frying a few at a time to avoid overcrowding the pan. Fry until golden brown and crispy on all sides.
  7. Remove the fried sabudana pops with a slotted spoon and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil.
  8. Serve the crispy spiced Sabudana Pops hot with mint chutney, tamarind chutney, or ketchup.
