Ingredients

Check off items as you gather them
  • 1 cup Sama Rice (Barnyard Millet)
  • 2 tablespoons Ghee or oil
  • 1 teaspoon Cumin Seeds (Jeera)
  • 2-3 Green Chillies, finely chopped
  • 1/2 inch Ginger, grated (optional, if consumed during fasting)
  • 1 large Potato, peeled and finely diced
  • 1/4 cup Roasted Peanuts, coarsely crushed
  • 2.5 cups Water
  • 1 teaspoon Rock Salt (Sendha Namak), or to taste
  • 2 tablespoons Lemon Juice
  • Fresh Coriander Leaves, chopped (for garnish, optional)

Method / Preparation

Follow step-by-step instructions
  1. Wash the Sama Rice thoroughly under running water and drain well. You can soak it for 10-15 minutes for quicker cooking, then drain.
  2. Heat ghee or oil in a heavy-bottomed pan or kadai over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and let them splutter.
  3. Add chopped green chillies and grated ginger (if using). Sauté for a minute until aromatic.
  4. Add the finely diced potato and cook for 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it starts to soften.
  5. Add the drained Sama Rice and crushed peanuts to the pan. Sauté for another 2-3 minutes, stirring constantly, until the rice is lightly toasted.
  6. Pour in the water and add rock salt. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce heat to low, cover the pan, and simmer for 10-12 minutes.
  7. Check if the water has been absorbed and the Sama Rice is cooked and fluffy. If it's too dry, you can add a little more hot water and cook for a few more minutes.
  8. Stir in the lemon juice and garnish with fresh coriander leaves, if desired.
  9. Serve hot as a fulfilling farali meal.
